Sermon Illustrations from Final Season, The (2007)

In the tiny town of Norway, Iowa, high school baseball has a long and noble tradition. With a student body of just a little over 100, their baseball team, the Tigers, has managed to win 19 Iowa State Baseball Championships. But a move toward more efficient schools threatens Norway high school with annihilation. They are fated to be folded into the larger Madison High School District.

The Norway Tigers have one final season to distinguish themselves, but with the forced retirement of their legendary coach Jim Van Scoyoc, make the prospects for a 20th championship bleak. When Kent Stock arrives to coach, the students discover that his last coaching assignment was girl's vollyball. But by earning the respect of the team, and working to earn the mantle passed on to him by Van Scoyoc, Kent drives the team toward their chance to make history.

Scene Setup: The Norway Tigers are in the final inning of the Iowa State Baseball Tournament. Only one out stands between them and a record 19th win. But a strong hitter faces Brent Fitz, the Tigers' tiring pitcher, so coach Jim Van Scoyoc strides to the mound to have a talk with Brent.

Scene Setup: Mitch Akers is a big city kid who suddenly finds himself stranded in small-town Iowa, living with his grandparents after he becomes too difficult for his father to handle. He brings with him a "too-hip" attitude and a disdain for authority. Mitch insists on looking for a fight with everyone, including his grandfather. But his grandfather, unlike others who walk away, does not disappoint him. Grandpa lovingly fights back.
