Sermon Illustrations from Little Mermaid, The (1989)

Princess Ariel, the sixteen-year-old daughter of Triton, King of the Ocean, is unhappy with her life under the sea. In spite of her father's warnings against contact with humans, Ariel defies his commands and seeks to discover more about the world above the water. After rescuing a human prince, and incurring her father's wrath, Ariel seeks out Ursula, the Sea Witch, and bargains away her voice in exchange for a temporary transformation from mermaid to human. If she can get Prince Eric to fall in love with her in three days, then all will be well. But if Ariel fails, she will belong to the Sea Witch -- body and soul. This film explores the cause and consequences of childish rebellion. Parents and pastors should feel free to explain that the happy ending envisioned by the Disney company in fashioning this family friendly entertainment was not shared by the originator of The Little Mermaid tale, Hans Christian Andersen.
